A historic achievement

Russian Musicology, a scholarly journal indexed in highly authoritative Web of Science Core Collection (ESCI) and Scopus databases, has received international recognition of the highest order. According to the 2025 SCImago Journal & Country Rank (SJR), which is based on Scopus data, Russian Musicology has been ranked No. 1 worldwide among 201 journals in the field of musicology and placed in the first quartile (Q1), signifying its position among the world’s leading journals in its subject categories.

For the first time in history, Russia has surpassed the United States and the United Kingdom in the global Music category, where those countries had long maintained their leadership. In addition, a musicology journal has, for the first time, topped the overall SCImago ranking of Russian scholarly journals, an achievement that had long been regarded as virtually unattainable for the humanities. This remarkable accomplishment provides compelling evidence that Russian scholarship in musicology is fully capable of competing at the highest international academic level and of attaining leading positions in the world’s most prestigious research rankings.

I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the members of the Editorial Board and to the Journal’s authors on this outstanding achievement. I express my profound gratitude for their invaluable contribution to the advancement of Russian scholarship.

I would like to acknowledge the dedication and professionalism of the Journal’s Editorial Office and the staff of the Department of Scientometrics and Ranking Strategies at the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music, including:
